Bijal Balasubramanian, MBBS, PhD
Dr. Bijal Balasubramanian is a primary care physician and epidemiologist. She is assistant professor in the Division of Epidemiology, Human Genetics, and Environmental Science at the University of Texas School of Public Health. Her research focuses on understanding the causes of health care disparities among minority and underserved populations.
She works with multi-disciplinary teams that utilize innovative mixed-methods designs. She utilizes epidemiologic techniques to evaluate the impact of quality improvement interventions in primary care.
Bijal’s experience with evaluation of quality improvement interventions includes her role as lead epidemiologist for Round 2 of the Prescription for Health evaluation funded by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. This program funded ten practice-based research networks to implement innovative interventions to improve health behavior counseling in primary care practices.
Bijal has also led the outcomes teams of several large quality improvement trials in primary care focused on improving adherence to guidelines for chronic diseases and on improving rates of cancer screening.
Aside from her professional pursuits, Bijal enjoys creating new culinary delights by fusing ingredients and techniques from different world cuisines.
